Bad Creek Cattle Co.

Branding, Naming, Strategy & Web

Along the banks of Bad Creek in rural Ohio, Tom and Debi Taylor raise cattle that spend their lives freely grazing across rolling pastureland. This family operated cattle farm, Bad Creek Cattle Co. believes exceptional beef begins long before it reaches the table: healthy, happy cattle require care and stewardship. Healthy, happy cattle produce good beef, and “good beef should be red”. —Tom Taylor

Before partnering with GOODNOTBAD, the farm had become a well-kept secret among local families—a trusted source of high-quality beef known almost exclusively through word of mouth. As demand continued to grow, the business required an identity that carried its values beyond its local community and preserved honesty and intimacy.

The mark

GOODNOTBAD started with the visual signature of the farm, the brandmark. Cattle shaped and directly inspired by the iron cattle brands used to distinguish livestock across shared grazing land. The mark appears across packaging, merchandise, stationery, digital experiences, and environmental applications to create a cohesive system. The mark is cohesive on a shipping box, a ranch sign, or a handwritten thank-you note.

Visual language draws heavily from one of Tom’s favorite pastimes. An avid collector of American newspapers from the 1970s, the founder’s archive informed a tactile layer throughout the brand. Scanned newsprint textures introduce an imperfect, analog quality across photography, motion, and print, allowing digital touchpoints to retain the warmth and character of physical media.

The pasture became another extension of the brand’s philosophy. Sunset at Bad Creek bathes the pasture in soft, golden light and the warmth of the setting sun meets the cool breeze of night. That atmosphere informed the visual treatment of the farm’s photography and video—calm, expansive, and reverent effects were incorporated throughout the identity and color story.

The digital ecosystem

Beyond the identity itself, GOODNOTBAD designed and developed a complete digital ecosystem that could support the farm’s next stage of growth. A new website paired storytelling with ecommerce, introducing an intuitive preorder experience that reflected the realities of small-batch beef production. Customers could reserve products in advance while the Bad Creek team fulfilled orders in measured production cycles, creating a more predictable workflow for the farm and a clearer purchasing experience for customers.

The expanded brand system extended into every point of interaction—custom shipping box stamps and tissue paper inserts to event materials, apparel, tableware, and stationery used by the founders for handwritten correspondence. Each piece reinforces the feeling of a business built by people who know their customers by name believing thoughtful details matter.

Today, the identity gives Bad Creek Cattle Co. the presence of a regional brand while preserving the character of their family farm. GOODNOTBAD helped Bad Creek Cattle Co. create a visual language that transformed the rhythms of the land, the heritage of cattle farming, and the founders’ personal story into brand resonance.
